Local Government is the doorstep institution to the local people of countryside of Bangladesh. The institutions of local government play indispensable role to fortify citizen empowerment and overall development activities at the local level. As an institution of local government, ZP had an illustrious history not only in Bangladesh but also in the Indian subcontinent. Regrettably ZP had not been given constitutional ground for a long time in Bangladesh because of narrow game of politics. Recently the government of Awami League arranged maiden election to revive the institution but it has become victim of party interest. ZP has been made on the basis of Electoral College system of election where general people did not vote to choose their representatives at the districts level. With all of this, immense central control regarding decision making, financial and administrative issues made the institution ineffective to carry out its functions properly. But we hope that government will take necessary steps to make an effective Zila Parishad for ensuring sustainable development at the district level in Bangladesh.
